Mumbai Roads To Hell

Is it poor planning of the civic authorities or work pressure that make the city roads messy?

Throughout the year, Mumbais roads are under construction time and again. Sometimes it is the leaking pipelines underground or sometimes it is the damaged roads that need to be repaired for which people are forced to face the consequences till the work is complete.

And the common man is left to wonder why all the roads are being repaired at a time!
Sulabha Rajjatt, of Jogeshwari East, says, The civic authorities should concentrate on pressurizing the contractors to start and complete the project within a time-frame. The authorities tend to forget about the project once the contract is handed over. They are then least bothered about whether the contractor has started working on it or not. They suddenly remember about the project when the public complains about the inconvenience caused and then realise that the deadline of the project is approaching.

The Western Express Highway, one of the city's arterial roads, is riddled with potholes, which are now being filled up with loose gravel. The result is clouds of dust, which make it impossible to see clearly. "The road has still not been repaired. My child keeps falling sick because of the pollution," says a resident of the area. While a traffic policeman says, "We also suffer because of the dust. We have to be here on duty all day and we keep inhaling all the dust. Inadequate funds? Every year the BMC
