Mumbai has always had a soft spot for the races in Pune. And as the season opens on Saturday, the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) has gone out of its way to make the experience that much more pleasant this time: a new coffee bar-cum-lounge, more TV sets, electronic information boards and additional seating.
But the big draw, RWITC hopes, will be the sponsored races every weekend. Last season, sponsored race days were minimal. This year, every weekend will have a sponsor, promises Vivek Jian, chairman of the clubs media and marketing group.

Crawford Market revamp hits heritage hurdle
Mumbais heritage committee on Thursday ruled out the possibility of any new constructions in the Crawford Market complex. The decision is a blow to shopkeepers whose contentious redevelopment plans for the 140-year-old Grade 1 heritage site included constructing modern buildings adjacent to the civic markets clock tower and fountain. Shopkeepers had roped in a developer to revamp the 22,500 sq m precinct, and the decision was cleared by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporations elected body last September, despite public protests. The plan was awaiting approval from the heritage panel, an advisory body to the BMC, and the civic chief. Bipin Sankhe, heritage
Mumbai airports
The revamp of the Delhi and Mumbai airports may run into another rough spell due to the non-availability of operating licenses. Even after the central government cleared the contentious tender hurdle to get the revamp of the two airports going, the absence of some documents with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) is now posing fresh problems for the government. "The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has now cited that the process of physical transfer will not be possible unless the controlling bodies of the two airports transfer their existing licenses in the name of the private parties who would now
Mumbai to be more tourist-friendly
Mumbai, March. 4 (PTI): The Gate of India, the Grade-I heritage structure on the southern tip of the metropolis which is one of the most visited tourist spots here, is awaiting renovation of its surroundings. Authorities are aiming at clearing its surroundings and making them more user-friendly, less congested and visually more elegant. The stone and concrete areas of the Gateway itself will be left intact but the Shivaji Gardens just below and its precints are to be beautified, pedestrian movements made easier and motor traffic regulated with a no-parking zone. Standing at the city's entrance from the sea, this
Mumbais Aayakar Bhavan to get facelift
Precisely 1,264 steel cupboards occupy the corridors of the seven-storeyed Aayakar Bhavan — headquarters to the income tax department at Marine Lines in Mumbai. Add to this unwieldy files with the fabled red tape on them, depressingly old furniture and the contrast couldnt be more startling. For a building that collects 40% of the income tax in the country, it looks hopelessly shoddy. Its a shame. My son refuses to come to any income tax office as he finds such places humiliating, said a leading CA, whose son just joined his firm. Why blame him? With 4,000 employees, it has
Planning a new Mumbai
Architect Hafeez Contractor has a new dream for Mumbai. A new marine drive, stretching all the way from the Governors garden to Bandra Fort. Contractor, known for his radical ideas, is not proposing a reclaimed stretch on which Mumbais ultra rich can buy bigger and better homes. Rather, he is proposing reclaiming land along this 17.6 km stretch to create an urban forest or parkland, where an ordinary Mumbaikar can come for a walk or enjoy a weekend picnic, without having to go out of the city. Today, there are no open spaces in the city. Even the
