India emerging as a big cocaine market

NEW DELHI: The big cocaine seizure aboard S L Voyager, the South African ship, in Mumbai on Saturday reinstates the fact that Columbian drug cartels have found India as one of the rising big markets for cocaine consumption.

Moderate assumption puts the total annual intake of cocaine by addicts in the country to around 100-120 kg, a majority of which is consumed in four cities - Mumbai, Delhi, Pune and Bangalore - by the rich and famous, according to top narcotics officials.

Sources said prior to Saturdays 200 kg cocaine haul in Mumbai, the annual seizure of the drug was just around 5-6 kg. This small seizure was estimated to be around 5% of the total cocaine smuggled into and in circulation in the country.
