MUMBAI: With the monsoon just days away, Municipal Commissioner Johny Joseph said on Friday that the BMC is in control. We have left no stone unturned in taking preventive measures, he told a panel discussion at the DNA office. If any emergency arises, we will react in the minimum possible time.
The discussion was organised to find out the citys rain-readiness quotient. Besides Joseph, three additional commissioners were part of the discussion. They were grilled over two hours about the BMCs efforts to guard against a 26/7 repeat.
Joseph said the focus was on the suburbs, where most of the flooding took place: We have immediate deadlines, but all works are undertaken with a three-year time frame. Citizens must bear with us for the inconvenience. Today, the Mithi is flowing like a river. Low-lying areas will be safe.

Harvest rain water or pay Rs 1000 fine
Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is all set to impose Rs 1,000 as fine on those who have failed to implement rainwater harvesting project on their properties. Town planning department of Nagpur Municipal Corporation has sent a proposal in this regard to the principal secretary, urban development department, Mumbai. If the department receives the nod, then rainwater harvesting would be compulsory for all new constructions having in an area of 150 sq metre or above, disclosed assistant director (town planning) Digambar Meher. Rain lashes Mumbai for 5th consecutive day
It rained continuously in Mumbai for the fifth successive day. Heavy to very heavy rain was reported in several areas of the city. All schools and junior colleges remained closed on Wednesday.
