Speed up work on Mumbai Metro: PM

Mumbai: The Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, on Saturday promised the people of Mumbai that his Government is committed to seeing that the city got world-class public transport system.

Calling upon the Maharashtra Government to speed up work on the Mumbai Metro, Dr Singh said the city could not continue to depend on a public transport that it has inherited from the distant past.

Dr Singh was speaking after launching a group personal accident cover `Mahasuraksha Yojna’ for over 2.25 lakh drivers of CNG-fuelled autorickshaws and taxicabs in Mumbai by Mahanagar Gas Ltd (MGL), a joint venture between GAIL, British Gas and the Maharashtra Government.

Metro may not alleviate Mumbai’s transport woes

By Probir Pramanik, Mumbai: A proposed Rs.23.46 billion metro railway project may not immediately alleviate the public transport woes of Indias commercial capital, says a leading expert. Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh announced Thursday that the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) had approved the Reliance Energy bid for the first phase of the metro network. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will inaugurate the construction work in June.

With the Metro rails stupendous success as a mass rapid transport system in Delhi and Kolkata, it is going to be replicated in six other cities in the country with an investment of about Rs 60,000 crore. While the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has already been appointed as the prime consultant for Hyderabad and Kochi Metro and the in-house consultant for Mumbai Metro, it has submitted detailed project reports for Metro systems in Bangalore, Kolkata, Ahemdabad and Chennai.
