Movement of poultry products to Mumbai stopped

Filed under:

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has ordered a ban on vehicles carrying poultry products from entering the city in the wake of the bird flu outbreak in Nandurbar district of Maharashtra, Mayor Datta Dalvi said here today.

“Since last night, we have begun stopping all such vehicles at all the entry points,” Dalvi told PTI.

Asked if only vehicles from Nandurbar were being stopped, he said, “We are stopping all poultry vehicles, no matter from which district they are coming.”

When queried if the civic body was ‘overreacting’ to the bird flu scare, Dalvi said “maybe". “Tomorrow, we do not want anyone to raise fingers at us, accusing us of inaction,” he said.

“As a result of our action against these vehicles, probably there may not be sufficient chicken meat in the market today,” the mayor said.

Dalvi said BMC has also deputed a team of doctors to inspect the places in city where poultry stock was stored.
