It’s official: Mumbai and Delhi airports are the pits

Filed under:

It is a truth universally acknowledged (at least by frequent fliers) that the Mumbai and Delhi international airports are among the worst in the world. And now, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) says so too.

In its customer satisfaction survey for 2004, IATA has ranked the Mumbai airport 26th in a list of 40. Delhi is no better at number 25. Both have ratings well below the Asian and global averages. While Mumbai airport scored 2.87 on a scale of 5, the Delhi airport was 2.96. The global average is 3.64.

The survey rated Hong Kong International Airport the “best airport worldwide", followed by Seoul’s Incheon and Singapore’s Changi.

It says the Mumbai airport — India’s busiest, catering to more than 30 per cent of the country’s passengers and handling around 520 flights daily — barely offers what it dubs as ‘Adequate Level of Services” (ALoS).

The survey covered the entire airport experience of international and domestic travelers who rated airports on 30 service-related factors before boarding flights. Among the parameters were terminal cleanliness and signage, seating facilities, immigration queues, waiting time at check-in and security counters, baggage handling, extended connecting time to airlines, clarity of boarding calls and language skills and friendliness of airport staff.
