Building collapse in Mumbai kills 11

Filed under:

India: At least 11 people were killed and 25 trapped in the debris when an apartment building in the centre of India’s financial capital collapsed yesterday.

Late last night, rescuers were searching through the rubble of the building for survivors with their bare hands. Forty-seven people had been rescued, but television news said chances of finding more survivors appeared slim. At least 31 people were injured, 19 were still in hospital and three were in a critical condition.

The dilapidated four-storey structure was more than 100 years old and home to 16 families. Most of the residents were asleep when the building crumbled.

Rescue officials evacuated residents from two adjoining buildings, while locals helped clear wood and tin debris. Rescue work was hampered because the collapsed building could be approached only through a single lane, which was narrow and crowded.

Building collapses, especially during the monsoon, are common in Mumbai, where more than 16,000 dilapidated buildings have been declared unsafe.

City officials repeatedly slap evacuation notices on unsafe buildings, but residents - mostly low-income families - routinely ignore the orders. The landlords rarely spend money on their upkeep.
