Pune is fourth in the state in terms of property stolen last year, but overall such thefts have multiplied five times since 2003. With property worth Rs 66.9 crore stolen in 2007, Pune follows (Rs 339.45 crore), Nagpur (Rs 166.44 crore), and Thane (Rs 68.69 crore), according to Crime in Maharashtra 2007, a report released by Deputy Chief of Minister R R Patil on Monday.
Across the state, property worth a whopping Rs 1022.44 crore stolen, while just Rs 146.2 crore was recovered. The theft figure is 41 per cent more than that of 2006, and 163.9 per cent more than that recorded in the year 2003. In 2006, property worth Rs 724.75 crore was stolen while the recoveries were worth Rs 103.86 crore. There was no significant change in recovery percentage terms — 14.30 per cent in 2007 and 14.33 per cent in 2006.
Detection has also been poor. The state police solved 25,106 cases of theft out of 71,909, or 34.9 per cent. Only the Gadhchiroli district police did well, recovering 74.2 per cent of the property stolen. The Pune police were able to recover only 24.5 per cent.
